The fact shims are not needed to install this starter saved our bacon. We could not get the old shim in while installing this starter. This new starter worked beautifully . It is pretty heavy and took the two of us to hold and mount it (we are not young or spry by any stretch of the imagination). If two old farts can get it installed, anyone can. As for longevity, that remains to be seen. It's been installed only a couple of months. Our old starter had a heat shield which we easily transferred. I did notice the teeth opening was quite a bit larger than old one. Hoping this will not cause an issue with water getting inside? This went on a 93 GMC with a 5.7 liter V8.
Ordered for a 1997 F-150 with 4.2 standard transmission 5 speed - starter, like most, are bolted to engine with just 2 bolts (some starters do have 3) and then there are 3 wiring connections. Should be an easy quick job, but it took me 4 hours, because with a vehicle this old bolts do not always come out easy. Also, with this engine, it is very difficult to access the upper mounting bolt. Because the solenoid is so close to bolt head, a socket will work, but a ratchet with no extension will not allow a straight on alignment of socket. And, there are lots of parts in the way when you try to do various extension combinations. My bolt head was not in perfect condition to start with, and of course I rounded it off. I had to cut / grind off the rounded bolt head to get the old starter out, and then use vise grips to get the bolt out - and even that was tough as I could only get about 1/8 turn per vice grip turn. Once I got that old bolt out replacement was easy. I did not need to "splice in" the wire that is shown in photos, as my vehicle's wire had already been replaced with a round connector from the original "slip on" connector.
This part was exactly what we needed for our 1997 Ford F350, it came very very fast , I would highly recommend this seller. Used this starter as a "swap" on my 1999 trans am. These have 2 long bolts instead of my stock 1 long 1 short (breaks and risks damaging block) Slightly shorter than my stock car ls1 starter, fit fine into the dust cover, had to use my stock long bolt only comes with 1 bolt (normal) This is where the only slight difficulty came in. Bolt was slightly too big to get through last part of frame, so we hit just under the bottom of the threads with a grinder very steadily around the circumference about a cm in length. This brought the bolt almost all the way up and then It snugged the rest of the way fine when installing. Turn the key and everything comes alive! Purchased from parts player, arrived before estimated delivery so that's great to start.
